Chipping Safely with Jo Beau – 5 Essential Tips
As user-friendly as they are – safety always comes first. That’s why we’re sharing 5 essential tips for safe chipping in 2025
1. Always wear personal protective equipment (PPE)
Working safely starts with the right equipment. Make sure you wear the following PPE when working with a wood chipper:
- Eye protection against flying debris
- Hearing protection – Jo Beau machines are powerful
- Sturdy, non-slip footwear
- Fitted clothing (avoid loose garments or jewellery)
- Long hair tied back
- Safety helmet, especially when working under trees
With a Jo Beau wood chipper, you don't need a push stick or rammer to guide branches into the machine. The Jo Beau blade drum system automatically pulls the branches into the machine.
2. Work in a safe and stable area
Always place your wood chipper on a stable, flat surface – preferably paved ground. Avoid slopes or loose material such as sand or gravel.
- Ensure sufficient space around the machine
- Keep bystanders, especially children and pets, at a distance
- Always stand to the side or behind the infeed
3. Maintenance matters
A well-maintained Jo Beau chipper not only performs better, but is also safer. Regular maintenance extends the life of your machine and prevents incidents.
- Check blades, bolts and moving parts before every use
- Clean your chipper after each session
- Have your machine serviced annually by an authorised Jo Beau partner
Refer to the manual for specific maintenance guidelines
4. Know your machine
Whether you work with an M300, M400 or M500: know the capabilities and limitations of your device.
- Read the user manual carefully
- Provide training for new users
- Start on a low load after maintenance or downtime
5. Take your time
Jo Beau shredders are designed for speed, but that doesn't mean you have to rush.
- Feed material gradually, one branch at a time
- Do not overload the chipper
- Stay alert – take breaks when needed
Maintain a firm stance and never reach into the infeed!
